Sage Patanjali's Yoga Sutras

Pearls of Wisdom Yoga studio in Boulder, Colorado offers Yoga Sutra Study sessions, one-two hour interactive discussions, one to four times per quarter. In the Yoga Sutras, Patanjali prescribes adherence to eight "limbs" or steps—the sum of which constitute Ashtanga Yoga.

The purpose of yoga is to still the fluctuations or vrttis of consciousness, restrain prakrti/nature and move toward purusa/soul achieving freedom/kaivalya. The Yoga Sutras form the theoretical and philosophical basis of Raja Yoga and are considered to be the most organized and complete definition of that discipline.

In Yoga Sutra Study sessions, students are assigned pre-work and asked to read select Sutras and write responses to related questions. Lisa Jo facilitates a discussion asking students to consider how the assigned Sutras inform their practice and life.

The purpose of Sutra Study is to apply the ancient wisdom in practical ways to inform our daily lives - uncover how to help deal with anxiety, mental suffering, fear, conflict, disease, disappointment, and even death. By combining Sutra Study with disciplined practice in all limbs of Ashtanga Yoga, we devote ourselves to becoming more kind and compassionate members of our families, society, and the world.
